Visiting Artist, Jade Hoyer @ AML Gallery, Opening Reception November 8, 12-2pm

On view November 5 - December 14

Reception: November 8, 12-2pm

The Gallery @ the Art and Music Library is pleased to be exhibiting work by artist, Jade Hoyer.

Influenced by a professional career promoting access to education and her own background as a biracial Filipina-American, Jade Hoyer's work broadly addresses social issues. Using a combination of media including printmaking, installation, and social practice, she examines social systems concerning race, privilege, and intersectionality. By utilizing the visual language associated with order, such as charts, color-coding, and symbols, she refers to and questions greater social systems. Art is both her means of making sense of the world, and her means to address and change it.

In regards to her exhibition, Blazer, Hoyer states:

Since starting my job, I have amassed a ridiculous collection of blazers. Perhaps I’m trying to project authority. Perhaps this is in response to the slight expressions of surprise my students wear when they first meet me. “Oh you’re the professor?” Perhaps it’s that I am called “hon,” “sweetie,” or “dear” on a regular basis. Each time this happens I buy another blazer.

Analyst Robert Armstrong writes in the Financial Times, “The fact that I put on a [blazer] every

day implies that I am an adult, capable of successfully doing grown up things.” I tell myself that I too am capable of successfully doing grown up things. I buy another blazer. My male colleagues wear jeans.

Jade Hoyer is an Assistant Professor of Art at Metropolitan State University of Denver in Denver, Colorado. She has exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and Philippine Women’s University. Jade has been recognized by organizations such as the Minnesota State Arts Board (St. Paul, MN), the Denver Art Museum (Denver, CO), and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (Manila, Philippines), and she has also held leadership positions on international print organizations including SGC International and the Association of Print Scholars. Jade completed an MFA with a printmaking emphasis at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a BA in Studio Art and Environmental Studies at Carleton College. Outside of the classroom and studio, Jade enjoys hiking, attempting to mix cocktails, and co-parenting an affectionate codependent dog.
