Artist Talk with Njogu Touray

Njogu Touray is one of most well-known and respected artists in The Gambia. His work has been exhibited internationally in art galleries throughout the United States, Europe, Senegal, and The Gambia. In 2015, he participated in the exhibition “Lumières d’Afriques” at the National Theatre of Chaillot in Paris. He is the co-founder of the international street art organization Wide Open Walls and the proprietor of the Sakura Arts Studio in Latrikunda. In 2007, the President of The Gambia commissioned Touray to make art for the Presidential collection and, later, to create art for 52 villas built for the African Union Summit. He campaigns for the environment by using local, sustainable materials and remains eager to introduce children to artistic practice by providing accessible, free, contemporary art workshops. He has received two national awards by the President of the Republic in recognition of his contribution to national development. Touray will travel to the University of Rochester from The Gambia to talk about his creative practice and community engagement projects.
