Discussion with Ugandan Filmmaker Alex Semambo

We would like to invite you to a discussion with Alex Semambo, a documentary filmmaker and human rights activist from Kampala, Uganda. He will talk about the film that he is currently working on, Born Gay, a documentary that advocates for public acceptance and legal protection of the LGBTQIA community in Uganda in light of the recent bill to “criminalize homosexuality”. As co-founder of Image Videos Uganda and the non-for-profit Open Youth Society Travel Festival, he has traveled to over 28 rural villages to organize public screenings, debates, and performances that address topics such as violence against women, public health awareness, drug abuse, and equal rights for the LGBTQIA community. Semambo has directed and produced films including Omununuzzi (The Girl Power), and Bamulazeki, (The Hidden Blood), as well as many short, educational films for television networks.
This event is being hosted by the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies, the Department of Art & Art History, and the Frederick Douglass Institute for African and African-American Studies.
