The University of Rochester's Department of Art and Art History is delighted to present the 2023 Senior Thesis Exhibitions. The upcoming event will feature the works of 18 Studio Art majors who will showcase their solo exhibitions both on and off campus from April 10 to May 6, 2023. Each artist blends their interdisciplinary expertise with a diverse media in their studio practices.
Angelica Aranda explores the intersection of the tangible and imagined through writing to imaginary recipients and reflective publications. Emma Bentley prioritizes the creative process over the final outcome, using personalized symbols and materiality to investigate the artmaking process. With an art history background, Nathan Cobbs experiments with deconstructed objects and ideas through three-dimensional digital mediums and collages. Madeline Coleman takes everyday objects and manipulates their materiality and scale to render them nonfunctional, creating relatable representations of feelings. Mae Cooke, a multidisciplinary artist and harpist, expresses emotions through detailed realism drawings, surreal sculptures, and frenzied sketches. Brooke Fiannaca uses art as a form of journaling to better understand herself and capture her memories. Mya Fisher examines the impact of parasocial relationships and seeks to bridge her online and real-life relationships. Jacob Hanley's artistic practice delves into examining the human psyche in the face of temporal change, using graphite drawing as a medium. Phi Kasem-Beg explores the relationship between the self and corporeality through printmaking and fiber arts. Caitlin Labianca creates tangible representations of her inner world through a reinterpretation of folk tales in the modern world through photography and sculpture. Sophie Lever depicts her sense of self and identity with representational and abstract elements through ceramics, paintings, prints, and drawings. Anna Lussier's art addresses environmental issues, combining environmental facts, fiction, and futures to challenge people's perceptions. Tasia Shen examines attachment formation and emotional communication through installation works. Zeb Stafford blends fantasy and reality to explore storytelling through printmaking, drawing, and digital art. Aditi Thakur considers her art practice a form of meditation, using repetitive processes such as printmaking and crocheting. Ivy Tong explores her Asian American, bilingual identity through photography, bookmaking, and videography. Mofei Wu is driven by a constant curiosity about the relationship between the past and future, incorporating sensory emotions into her multi-disciplinary creations. Sarah Woodams, from Greater Rochester, showcases her connection to the world through landscape photography and text-infused graphic design.
