About me:
Norma Martínez (Norma Nahua) On the edge of the Huasteca region, I was born in a Nahua community in Chicontepec, Veracruz, Mexico, where tradition and beauty intertwine in every corner. As a child, a visionary teacher recognized my passion for art and encouraged me to express myself through color and drawing. However, it was at age 11 that I discovered painting. Although my academic path led me to a degree in Engineering, Food Science, and Technology, my true calling was always art. At age 19, I presented my first solo exhibition at the Cultural Week of my state of Veracruz, marking the beginning of my artistic career. My art is a reflection of my essence, a journey of self-discovery and healing. The vibrant colors and textures of my grandmothers' clothing, the wildflowers, and the landscapes of my childhood merge in my works, created using acrylic techniques. Each brushstroke is a step toward myself, an attempt to capture the beauty and richness of my cultural heritage. With each work, I seek to share the essence of my people and my culture. In the silence of my solitude, I rediscover myself and connect with the divine.

mission
Through its well-trafficked location at the entrance of the Art and Music Library, Frontispace engages the UR community with thought-provoking exhibitions. The gallery’s year-round schedule and summer residency program stimulate dialogue and connect the university to the broader Western New York artistic landscape, with a focus on local and emerging artists working in a variety of media. The gallery also serves the Art and Art History Department by hosting special exhibitions of work by visiting artists, seniors, and alumni.

our name
Our gallery takes its inspiration from the frontispiece, traditionally an illustration facing the title page of a book that sets the tone for the contents within. With its rotating exhibitions, Frontispace invites visitors to pause and reflect as they pass through the entryway to the Art and Music library.
