Mind Body Bind

May 5 - 18

Opening Reception: May 8th 4-6 pm, Artist Talk at 5pm

Ellie Chung

Ellie Chung’s artistic practice explores the mental and physical sensations surrounding emotion. Through her works, Chung visualizes and conveys the intangible phenomena that occur within

people throughout their everyday. This has led to Chung’s reliance on imagery to express these experiences, and a subsequent interest in how others physically perceive their emotions. For her, visuals bypass the barriers of language to leave enough unsaid so viewers are invited to blend their own experiences with Chung’s, creating a unique conversation between artist and viewer. Visual imagery bridges this mental and physical gap to facilitate this conversation.

This focus has prevailed consistently across Chung’s artistic portfolio, through investigations of the relationship between fear and desire, and attempts to depict physical manifestations of raw

emotions, among others. These depictions aim to tie mental feelings with their accompanying physical sensations – a suffocation in the chest from deep sadness, a tingling numbness through the arms and head from anticipation, a deafening roar and static behind the eyes from rage.

mission

Through its well-trafficked location at the entrance of the Art and Music Library, Frontispace engages the UR community with thought-provoking exhibitions. The gallery’s year-round schedule and summer residency program stimulate dialogue and connect the university to the broader Western New York artistic landscape, with a focus on local and emerging artists working in a variety of media. The gallery also serves the Art and Art History Department by hosting special exhibitions of work by visiting artists, seniors, and alumni.

our name

Our gallery takes its inspiration from the frontispiece, traditionally an illustration facing the title page of a book that sets the tone for the contents within. With its rotating exhibitions, Frontispace invites visitors to pause and reflect as they pass through the entryway to the Art and Music library.
